removing cultural biases from the classroom

This session will unpack how educators can work together in developing a community of cultural understanding and self-awareness at their institution. We will examine ideas and strategies to build an anti-bias learning space and curriculum, while learning how to self-check own biases from entering the classroom. 

Creating an assessment that gives feedback on the curriculum.

During this workshop, we will address the importance of feedback in assessing curriculum effectiveness. Educators will learn how to create meaningful assessments that evaluate students' progress and provide insights into the success of inclusive and unbiased approaches. By embracing authentic assessments, educators can gather valuable feedback to refine teaching methods and adapt curriculum for diverse student engagement and support.

 

Who is Naima Dawson

Naima A. Dawson is a well-experienced educator, writer, and content creator. She has a Master of Education degree in Teaching and Learning from DePaul University, a Master Fine Arts in Screenwriting for film and television, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Poetry from Columbia College.

Naima is a native of Chicago, specifically from the Southside of the city. She is also the granddaughter of the renowned fashion designer, Precious E. Lashley. Precious was not only a successful fashion designer but also a fashion teacher who set fashion trends for women for over forty years in major department stores before she passed away in 2009. Naima grew up in a household where progressive women entrepreneurs were the norm, so it's not surprising that her own career reflects the influence of her upbringing.

THE EDUCATOR

Naima Dawson is an experienced professor and holds an active Professional Teacher's License with the Illinois Board of Education. Her goal is to provide valuable training to help teachers feel more empowered in the classroom. Naima offers a variety of comprehensive workshops for both high school and college educators. These workshops focus on personal development, effective classroom management, and assessment strategies for promoting student learning.

THE ARTIST

As a published author, playwright, and screenwriter Naima discovered the transformative power of words and narratives. Recognizing the untapped potential in both seasoned and budding writers, she has crafted various writer's workshops tailored for teens and adults of varying skill sets. Through her rich experience in diverse storytelling mediums, Naima seeks to illuminate the path for others, empowering them to weave their own captivating tales.

Naima Dawson believes that there are incredibly talented artists and educators all around us, but they often go unnoticed and their work is not recognized. To address this issue, she is organizing workshops that aim to empower these individuals and help them unlock their full potential.
